icity) & Presentation Tips to Enhance your Image

Want to know if your PR company is doing a good job for you?
If you're doing a good job for yourself?

My objective is to inform and educate, so I won't reveal
the name of the highly respected company that sent me this
release, but I will illustrate the problems so you can avoid them.

The PR company's objective? Trying to get me to come to their
author's booksigning.

The author? A professional organizer.

You are savvy enough to realize that the biggest, darkest, most important
words on the page should be the "grabber headline," right?

Well , note that a grabber headline is not the largest print on the page.
The author's name and book title aren't even part of the enormous,
needlessly oversized header. The words "Media Release" are mysteriously
several inches high.

So what? We know it's a media release! Where's the grabber headline?

Above the enormous "Media Release" words is (name withheld) Literary Publicists.

Okay. Good. Branding. As it shoots into my fax machine, I quickly know it's a
MEDIA RELEASE!!!! from (name withheld) Literary Publicists who have branded
themselves well on the author's dime.

As an internationally syndicated columnist and TV show host, I wouldn't read this release
simply because it's a MEDIA RELEASE!!!! and the illustrious firm of (name withheld) Literary Publicists

Again, where's the grabber headline that:
1. Teases or tricks me into reading it instead of tossing it.
2. Tells me the subject is relevant for my audience.
3. Uses "you magic" (discussed below)

Reading towards the middle of the page, the "meat" begins.

Let's consider the headmen first.
"Get Rid of the Mess and the Stress"
because the word "and" is in italics, it stands out more than the headline.

A better headline would be one which asks a question, such as:
Stressed? Get Rid of Your Mess!

This accomplishes two things, at least for me as both a journalist and an individual.
The individual in me responds to the "you magic" of the way the copy
seems to be talking directly to me.

I am stressed, and my office is usually a mess. Am I stressed because the office is
a mess, or is it a mess because I'm stressed? Either way, they have me with this headline.

I have no concern for anyone else's stress or mess (sorry).

Always address the person pulling it from the fax machine. Even if they are
reading it for their audience, they will pay attention.

Okay, now the subhead.
"Professional Organizer Explains How to Clear the Clutter"

Excuse me! It should be "your clutter!" (you magic, again)

But Since I've just ordered myself to "Get Rid of My Mess" with my reworked
you-centered headline, the subhead can even be wackier.

And more personal.

For inspiration, take a look around your desk. What kind of mess is there?
Yesterday's coffee cup? Find item that will make the MEDIA RELEASE!!!
Reader go "huh!? What's wrong with that picture?

For me, that would have to be cat paw prints on my desktop, but this is another story

Here's how the first sentence reads: "Stacks of junk mail on the kitchen counter.
Closets full of clothes that haven't been worn in years. Files of paperwork dating back to the early '90s...."

Absolutely none of this applies to me. I wouldn't be interested.

As a journalist, statistics reflecting that 99% of all American homes have a
junk drawer, a quote from a stress specialist saying that 87% of stress is
attributed to people's lack of organization, might get my attention.

The rest of the release is very good. And they get kudos for leaving a
nicely delivered voice message following up. But a strong lead is crucial!

Want to read the release for yourself? And be part of a stimulating
discussion about media releases, publicity, and all aspects of promotion?
