     In 2004 I had the good fortune to invite Jon Engelskirger to chat about the wines at Turnbull Wine Cellars with me in at my television studio in Boston. The winery is located in Oakville, California, and under Jon's direction is increasingly winning many awards for its Merlots and Cabernets. Every wine at Turnbull is an estate wine, meaning they grow their own fruit, and nothing is purchased from outside sources.

      Patrick O'Dell bought the winery in 1993 and hired winemaker Jon Engelskirger, a twenty year veteran of the Hanna, Pepi and Silverado wineries, with the promise that he would have 23 varietals to play with.

     In our conversation, we speak about the Napa wine auction, various varietals, and why Sangiovese is his favorite wine (he sounds very much like the character Miles in the film Sideways when he speaks of it).
